Caffeinate and Exfoliate

Exfoliate DIY coffee scrub

A year or so ago, I remember coffee scrubs being all the rage on Instagram. I was also working from home for the first time and making my own coffee in the French press every day. Day after day I threw out the used grounds. Being the modern hippie that I am, I wanted to reuse them somehow…. like in a DIY non-toxic facial scrub!

As a 30-something woman, the need to both caffeinate and exfoliate on a regular basis is strong. If you feel the same, here’s a quick lil scrub you can whip up in a few minutes…

*Do not attempt if you do not have a removable shower head/hose. Coffee grounds will get all over the shower and hose is required to rinse off. OR I recommend doing just your face over the sink.

*Not recommended for women younger than about 28 unless your grounds are very fine. French press grounds are very course and why I love them for exfoliating.

Directions:

  • CAFFEINATE
  • Find a small airtight container. (Mine is a glass canning jar, but a small plastic Tupperware is ideal for shower safety)
  • Drain coffee grounds as best you can and add to container.
  • Add 1-2 spoonfuls of sugar.
  • Add in coconut oil gradually until mixture becomes thick and paste-like.
  • Optional: Add a few drops of essential oil. I like eucalyptus and spearmint.
  • EXFOLIATE!

…obviously, don’t forget to moisturize after exfoliating. I usually caffeinate and exfoliate with this DIY scrub once a month, until it’s gone (It will get funky if left unused). And I use it for whole body exfoliation, not just my face. I’m not sure if it’s the caffeine or the serious exfoliation, but I definitely notice a difference in my skin after using it. Feels brighter and tighter after getting rid of a few layers of dull, dead skin. Most of all, I love that it is chemical free and one more way I can eliminate exposure to toxins! A simple little thing that helps me look good AND feel good…..Win-win!
